HOW IS IT COMPILED?
The Critic List shows the number of stars each film has gained from the chosen panel of 7 respected film publications. The films are then ranked according to a % of the maximum no of stars available.
HOW ARE THE SCORES CALCULATED?
All the publications currently mark out of 5 stars. Until 5th June 2009, Time Out marked out of 6 stars but now it has reverted to the 5 star system. Prior to 2010, Film Four (now replaced in The Critic List by Little White Lies magazine) gave 1/2 marks - for the sake of aesthetics we rounded up their scores on the display (so 3.5 became 4) but used the actual mark to calculate the final score, which is a percentage of the total stars available (i.e. if a publication doesn\'t rate a film then it is excluded from the calculation of that film\'s score).
WHY THESE 7 PUBLICATIONS?
The 7 publications used all have respected film critics, review every film released each week and give a star rating. There are lots of other great film reviews but most publications don’t fulfil all those 3 criteria. From 2010 we replaced Film Four (which has stopped reviewing all films) with the film magazine, Little White Lies.
DO YOU INCLUDE EVERY FILM RELEASED EACH WEEK?
Yes , providing it has been reviewed by at least 4 of the 7 critics (which only the very smallest releases fail to do). Re-releases are not included.
